She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with Distinction, from the University of Alberta. Melley's artistic practice revolves around sculpture, installation, and world building. She employs mediums such as ceramics, plaster, wood, chocolate, sugar, and living plant material in her sculptures. Melley explores what happens in the overlap between human worlds, natural worlds, and the built environment through installations of living, growing ceramic sculptures. Her recent line of functional ceramics allow a more personal connection to the work. Her creations are meant to be picked up, held, and enjoyed. They provide a gentle request to slow down and savor the moment; enjoy running your finger over the texture, or admiring the sunlight hitting the glaze and making it come alive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMelley begins each series of sculptural homewares with a color palette, generally inspired by her love and awe for the natural world. Once selected, she hand mixes the clay with specialized pigments that survive the intense heat of the firing process. These special colored clays are then combined with white clay using a variety of techniques to create different visual effects ranging from marbled gradients, to abstracted landscapes. After throwing on the wheel, each piece is then carefully altered with trimming, smoothing or carving to reveal a precisely refined form.
