This piece is part of the exhibition Innovative Threads: Contemporary Weaving on at the Alberta Craft Gallery - Calgary from January 25 to April 12, 2025.
"The item I have chosen is a double weave piece, and I have worked to change one side of the shawl slowly to the other side. There are 12 different iterations affecting the changes. I was first introduced to this process in the book, "Weaving with Echo and Iris" by Marian Stubenitsky published in 2014. Double weave has been around for many years, but the manipulation is quite new and being able to do a complex structure requiring many shafts on the loom means only a computer loom is appropriate.
I made this piece last year to comment on the merging in January, of the two towns just south of where I live. Turner Valley and Black Diamond became "Diamond Valley". Oil in Alberta was discovered in Turner Valley which is why I have simulated the iridescence of an oil slick. I prefer to work with natural fibers and design using a weaving computer programme - Fiberworks. On my large loom, I interface the computer with the loom so that, once I have completed the design process and warped the loom, I can then concentrate on just the weaving as the hard work has already been done."
