This piece is part of the exhibition Innovative Threads: Contemporary Weaving on at the Alberta Craft Gallery - Calgary from January 25 to April 12, 2025.
"During the early years of my graphic design background, I found myself drawn to the works of the students and teachers of the Bauhaus. In particular, I felt increasingly interested by the process, technique, and graphic logic found in the handwoven works of Anni Albers. Her piece, Black-White-Red, was my entry point into the craft and inspired me to pursue handweaving.
I typically work with mercerized and unmercerized 2/8 cotton on a 16-harness dobby loom. I feel as though the consistency and thickness of the yarn allows for the technique, process, and structure of a weaving to shine brightly in its finished state. Cotton also pairs wonderfully with my weave structure of choice: blocked double weave. Double weaves produce incredibly crisp lines when the multiple cloths intersect vibrant colour fields and allow for an extremely wide spectrum of pattern and graphic development on the loom. My craft of handweaving is a blend of my design background—bringing bold patterns and colours—and technique and structure- focused traditional weaving. I believe that my woven works fall within an underrepresented aesthetic: compositions that can look so crisp and emblematic of digital design and mechanical production, but in reality, are created through a process of pencil-on-paper drafts and hours of attentive labour at the loom.
I found that weaving is the perfect craft to reflect on our urban environments, which I see as weavings of-sorts themselves. I view cities as horizontal weavings, with infrastructures as the warp and interpersonal relationships as the weft. The works that I have submitted are inspired by a life living in Alberta's urban landscape. The construction, canola fields, quarrying, and transformations I have witnessed over my lifetime have resonated in my mind as colour field abstractions rendered in cotton."
