This piece is part of the exhibition Innovative Threads: Contemporary Weaving on at the Alberta Craft Gallery - Calgary from January 25 to April 12, 2025.
My preferred looms are the Dutch plank loom and the West Coast Salish loom. Money was scarce in post war Europe, where I grew up. Wool from unravelled sweaters were always available. My weavings are contemporary, in the sense that they are unique and express my painterly background. The portraits are shaped within a continuous warp, and I haven't seen anyone else use this technique. The portrait of Phillip Faber caused quite a sensation on Danish National Television. Phillip is a musician and a choir leader, who during Covid ran a popular sing- along program on a daily basis. When he encouraged diaspora to submit videos of their participation, I sent a video showing the woven portrait. My Danish family and friends were totally surprised, and some choked on their coffee.
