This piece is part of the exhibition Innovative Threads: Contemporary Weaving on at the Alberta Craft Gallery - Calgary from January 25 to April 12, 2025.
"Contemporary weaving on a traditional floor loom allows me to replicate, on a small scale, industrially produced textiles. By performing the act of weaving a textile or pattern that is already mass produced, I draw attention to my concerns regarding cultural negation, preservation of artisanal traditions and the myriad of problems caused as industrial textile production loom large, I continue to admire and explore the democratization of textiles and our innate ability to find self-expression through textiles. I hope my weaving exploration enables the preservation of craft traditions and celebrates individual expression while expanding our understanding of the role textiles have played throughout history. --- Weaving and the study of textiles enable me to realize the patterns, colours and textures I want to explore, while the study of textile history and the preservation of cultural traditions permeates my practice. The Red/White/Blue bag on submission is a one off; a hand woven in cotton linen blend on my fly shuttle loom and sewn into the exact dimensions of the common plastic version of this ubiquitous bag.
The infamous Red / White / Blue bag and its cheery colour palette often belies its journey. The bag accompanies those in transit. I see these plaid bags daily, in various states in Chinatown, Vancouver; remnants blowing down the street, lining a utility cart, if full, used for seating, hanging in store fronts, sometimes containing newly laundered clothes, more often containing all the possessions one can carry, as they are displaced once again."
