I chose this necklace to reimagine because I was drawn to its vibrant pink colour and inspired by its braided strands. While I was walking to the bus stop after picking it up, I found myself weaving through the bustling Jasper Avenue, imagining two people connected by long braided strands, trying to navigate the crowd without breaking their bond. I started thinking about how I would create a larger version designed for two people to wear together.
Reflecting on my own long-term relationship and marriage to my husband and influenced by jewellery typically worn by ravers known as Kandi, as well as Marina Abramović's Rest Energy, I envisioned the strands as a representation of the different forms of communication that connect two people. An interplay that is both strong yet vulnerable to the unexpected movements of one partner, relying on their ability to move in harmony. The colours of the piece were influenced by Snooki Polizzi from The Jersey Shore and the vibrant aesthetic of rave Kandi.
bead stringing wire, upcycled beads (glass, acrylic, pearl, shell), jump rings, metal findings, chain.
