For this exhibition, I created an object that honours the memories embedded in jewellery that was once treasured.
This piece is a collage of relics built from the past, reworked for the future. I gathered various elements to craft small figures, each telling tiny narratives, breathing new life into conversations about cherished items. The materials I used include metal, stone, pearls, abalone, thread, and copper wire, with decorative elements like flowers, leaves, winged insects, and bright colours.
In creating Reliquary, I focused on family connections, transforming the chaos of a junk drawer filled with discarded objects into a tribute to their past lives. I arranged these relics on a cushion of copper mesh, symbolizing the memories embedded in our neural pathways.
As I laid out the legacy pieces from the Bling Bucket and jewellery from my own collection, I was reminded of the hours I spent as a child taking apart objects and rebuilding them in new ways. With jewellery, I would repurpose thrifted pieces alongside my mom, creating new adornments that I wore with pride. Some of the jewellery in Reliquary also comes from my mom’s jewellery box, which was a magnificent source of wonder for a kid who loved interesting objects.
