This reimagined piece reflects my bond with my mother, Suzanne. Born in Germany in 1935, she immigrated to Canada at fifteen after surviving the war. The Atlantic crossing was harsh—ten days of cold, crowded, uncertain travel—marking a painful separation from everything she knew. Arriving in Halifax, she began again, eventually settling in Vancouver and embracing a new life.
As a young woman in Canada, she gathered the clothes and accessories that would come to define her style, storing them in the same steamer trunk that carried her across the ocean—layering her new life over the old.
After her death when I was twelve, that trunk became my connection to her. Opening it released the scent of mothballs and perfume, bringing me closer to the mother I had lost.
This piece is made from a pair of her earrings from the early 1960s. Even now, I can still smell the mothballs.
