Reimagined Underwing Moth is constructed from reclaimed materials and serves as a poignant commentary on the pressing issues of fast fashion, plastic waste, and overconsumption in our society, as well as their repercussions for the natural world. The sheer amount of waste generated by the fashion industry is staggering and devastating for the environment. My larger-than-life moth is crafted from discarded metal coat hangers and broken necklaces, diverting these materials from landfills and transforming them into something beautiful.
Moth imagery holds significant importance in my work; it symbolizes shadow work and acts as a spirit guide. I have always been captivated by moths, despite having once feared them. The journey of transforming that fear into a profound appreciation for these often-overlooked creatures continues to drive me.
During my moth-chasing adventures last summer, I set up a moth sheet and UV lights to observe them in both urban and natural settings. I was fortunate to encounter several variations of underwing moths, and the silhouette of this piece draws inspiration from them. By engaging so intimately with nature, I have gained insight into the consequences of overconsumption.
