I crafted three small sculptural scenes using fragments of vintage jewellery nestled inside half of a cast ostrich egg. The earrings, brooches, bracelets, and charms once belonged to someone, each piece carrying its own personal significance. By bringing them together within this delicate shell, I envision a new future for these items, giving them a renewed narrative.
This work is part of a series that delves into the preciousness of nature and emphasizes the importance of observing its smallest details. Within the shells, alongside the jewellery, I also included small needle-felted birds. A magpie guards its treasures, while a blue jay shelters within its “Alibaba” treasure-cave shell. A chickadee perches atop a mound of pearls, reminiscent of snow, illuminated by a tiny light created from an earring. These are birds I observe in my backyard almost daily, and I imagined these intimate worlds for them.
Through this artwork, I explore themes of memory, care for materials, and the fragility of both nature and keepsakes. It creates a connection between the past and the future, demonstrating how jewellery can be transformed into sculpture while continuing to express identity, protection, and hope.
