An ornament or ornamentation can serve simply as a decorative element intended to please the eye. However, it can also serve a more active purpose, such as expressing something, providing a distraction, or serving as a warning or form of identification. Ornamentation might be culturally driven or the result of spontaneously using an unexpected find.
My approach to this seemingly spontaneous application involved finding and utilizing repurposed materials from my studio. After several attempts, I decided on a hide that resembles smoke-tanned leather and rolled it into a small tassel. I also incorporated some blue telephone wire that I discovered at the edge of the highway during a family spring trip to the coast.
The spotted canvas ‘loops’ are made from pieces of painted canvas floorcloth that I created thirty years ago; they hold either end of the onion packaging bag, which serves as a neck drape. The entire piece is threaded with leftover synthetic twine that I found buried in the back of my kitchen junk drawer.
In this way, I believe everything old can be made new again! Though it could be seen as a necklace, I choose to present it as a non-functional art piece, showcased in isolation as a reflection of a fortuitous find.
