There are several inspirations from Alberta’s history that I have taken from, but the two that I drew the most from were “Unfamiliar Selves” by Jude Griebel and Tammy Salzl at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie, and “The Unmakers” by Kim McCollum at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie.
Both series speak to identity, portraiture, and the passing of information, which is the focal point of my piece. In my research through the archives of Albertan gallery shows, I struggled to find exhibitions that focused on or highlighted LGBTQ2S+ movements or artists. I did however, find an archived magazine — Fine Print— that ran in the 80’s that promoted queer life in the prairies, taking place during the AIDS epidemic.
Exhibition: Craft Perspectives showcases new works inspired by historical objects, archival collections, and cultural artifacts found across the province. Artists have delved into museum vaults, explored archival treasures, and uncovered forgotten stories—reimagining them through the lens of contemporary Craft.
