This choker, titled The Future is Thirsty, reflects my anxiety about the future and emphasizes the need for environmental stewardship. I applied to this exhibition without a clear plan and initially struggled to find inspiration while working with thrifted beaded jewellery.
After much experimentation, I confronted the unsettling thought: “Jewellery won’t matter if people are thirsty and hungry.” My greatest fear is dwindling fresh water supply, especially in Canada, which has one of the highest per capita usages largely for energy production. The Oil sands alone used nearly 1191 million cubic meters of fresh water in 2024, rendering it undrinkable.
Crafted primarily from thrifted materials, the choker symbolizes thirst and serves as a label on a plastic water bottle. The label, marked “Liquid Assets” in 24 karat gold beads, highlights the preciousness of fresh water in a resource-scarce world. Black drips on the label signify water consumed in oil extraction, while the barcode represents the commercialization of water. Red beads symbolize the potential for violence over dwindling supplies, and the white and blue drips represent my tears for the future. A sink plug attached to the clasp serves as a warning that we are wasting our future.
water bottle, sink plug, beads, necklace clasp, metal slide-on en tubes
12x 9 x 9cm
The piece is intended more for display than to be worn because the clasp and findings are all thrifted.
